Broadway Plaza to Kick-Off 2019 Summer Movie Series with the 1992 Sports-Comedy "A League of their Own"
The Broadway Plaza in Concordia's yearly Free Summer Movie and Concert Series will return for a third season this week.
On Thursday, June 13th, the Broadway Plaza will screen the 1992 sports-comedy "A League of their Own." The film focuses on the Rockford Peaches, one of four clubs that made up the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in its first season. The fictionalized story deals with the combative relationship between the team’s catcher, Dottie Hinson and her sister, Kit Keller.
Directed by Penny Marshall, the film features an all-star cast, including Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell, and Lori Petty. In 2012, "A League of their Own" was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
Broadway Plaza Event Coordinator Jessica Brucken says the movie will begin at 7 pm.
The evening's concessions will be run by the City of Concordia's Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Initiative.
In 2015, the City of Concordia received a grant through the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program of the U.S. Department of Justice to fund the School Resource Officer position at USD 333 Concordia for three years after the school district discontinued the position as part of local budget cuts. The grant award of $118,568 paid the officer's salary and benefits during the 2015-16, 2016-17, and 2017-18 school years.
Officer Doug Thoman says they've implemented several events and activities, such as operating the concession stand this week at the plaza, so law enforcement personnel can directly engage with the community.
Pros of Con, the community's young professionals group, will be hosting a social gathering prior to the movie.
