Cloud County Health Center Selects McCownGordon Construction as Construction Management At-Risk Firm
Cloud County Health Center has selected McCownGordon Construction, one of the largest general contractors and one of the fastest growing companies in the region, to provide construction management at-risk services in connection with the construction of a new, $40.35 million hospital along College Drive in Concordia being undertaken by Cloud County Health Center, Inc.
During a public presentation at the Broadway Plaza in downtown Concordia last summer, Cloud County Health Center officially announced its plans to construct a new 74,000 square-foot facility, including fourteen inpatient beds, emergency department, surgery space, rural health clinic, and all appurtenant services, as well as space to continue the variety of specialty clinic services already provided at the existing facility.
The hospital also made a commitment at that time to not seek local tax support for the construction of a new health care facility, continuing to be one of the few hospitals in the state of Kansas that does not receive tax support.
Cloud County Health Center announced plans in July 2019 to seek a loan from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) through a program that develops essential community facilities in rural areas to construct, purchase equipment and pay related project expenses for a new health care facility in Concordia.
In December 2019, Cloud County Health Center began requesting proposals from qualified construction management firms experienced in the construction of hospitals, medical office buildings and hospital renovations, for construction management at-risk services in connection with their planned construction project. Cloud County Health Center received expressions of interest from nine large firms with experience in health care, and seven of the nine firms attended a mandatory pre-bidding meeting in January 2020.
A selection committee consisting of members of the hospital administration and local board members, along with representatives from Salina Regional Health Center, narrowed the list down to three firms. All three firms were interviewed on January 31st.
Hospital Administrator David Garnas said they were fortunate to have three quality firms as finalists, but felt McCownGordon Construction's strong experience and expertise differentiated them from the rest.
Garnas said they are now setting up a schedule for the design process, which is expected to begin in the next couple of weeks and last approximately eight months.
McCownGordon has extensive experience in renovating, upgrading and building new hospitals, pharmacies, imaging centers, emergency departments, surgery centers, medical office buildings and other healthcare facilities.
In 2019, McCownGordon completed the addition and renovation of the Clay County Medical Center in collaboration with HFG Architecture. The renovated space includes a new surgery suite, labor and delivery rooms, patient rooms, a new main entrance and lobby. In addition, the project included renovations to the existing imaging suite, lab, offices and support areas. All renovations occurred within and adjacent to a fully-operating hospital requiring extensive coordination and communication with the surrounding departments.
McCownGordon has also worked on a variety of health care projects in the Kansas City area, including projects for St. Luke's Health System, the University of Kansas Health System, Children's Mercy Hospital, and more.
