USD 333 Concordia to Dismiss School Early to Allow Staff to Attend Funeral for Longtime Teacher

USD 333 Concordia will dismiss school at noon on Thursday, May 16th to accommodate district staff planning to attend the funeral services for longtime teacher Dana Nelson, who died Sunday, May 12th at Via Christi-St. Francis in Wichita at the age of 63.

Nelson joined USD 333 Concordia in 1977, where she taught elementary school for 36 years until her retirement in 2013.  Even after retirement, Nelson continued to substitute teach and work as a Title 1 Reading para-professional, a position she held full-time the last couple of years.

According to her obituary, "Her students were her children and she always made it a point to reach out to them, check up on them and continue to ‘teach’ them long after they were out of her classroom."

Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, May 16th at the Brown Grand Theatre in downtown Concordia.

"Dana had a huge impact on all of our staff members and we do not have enough substitute teachers to effectively cover the large number of staff using bereavement leave for the funeral," USD 333 Concordia announced in a Facebook post on Tuesday, May 14th.

There will be no Concordia After School Program or afternoon preschool on Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Dana J. Nelson Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.
