Concordia High School Baseball All-Decade Team: Pitchers

The Concordia High School Baseball team looked to enter the 2020 season with high expectations after winning back-to-back North Central Kansas League titles and reaching the championship game in last year's 3A Regional Baseball Tournament before the Kansas State High School Activities Association last month announced the cancellation of all spring championships, competitions, and festivals for the remainder of this school year.

The last decade for the Panther Baseball program was one of the most successful decades in all of Concordia sports history.  From 2010 to 2019, the Concordia High School Baseball team won eight North Central Kansas League titles, played in nine regional championship games, appeared in five state tournaments, and twice reached the state title game.

With the program unable to move onto the next decade this spring, KNCK will be taking one final look back at the decade that just passed by unveiling KNCK's All-Decade Concordia High School Baseball Team.

Over the past week, with the assistance of Concordia Head Coach Brandt Hutchinson, a four-person committee cast their votes for the best players by position.  To qualify for the All-Decade ballot, a player must have played in the decade, earned First Team All-North Central Kansas League recognition, and received a vote from the voting committee.  Players can only be named All-Decade at one position.

The voting committee consisted of former Concordia Head Coach Gerald Sorell who was instrumental in starting the Panther Baseball program; former Panther Baseball standout and current Cloud County Community College Head Coach Eric Gilliland; Concordia High School Baseball Alumni Coordinator Justin Diederich; and KNCK Sports Director Toby Nosker.

Five Starting Pitchers (in alphabetical order)

Billy Bechard - A four-year letterwinner for the Panthers, Bechard finished his high school career with a 15-4 overall record and a 2.09 earned run average.  Billy pitched 123 2/3 innings, recording 173 strikeouts.  A two-time Second Team All-State selection, Bechard later signed to play baseball at Cloud County Community College.

Garrett Brummett - A formidable arm in the Panther rotation, Brummett posted a 24-6 overall record as a starter at Concordia.  Named the team's Outstanding Senior Baseball Player in 2012, Garrett tossed 161 total innings during his high school career, racking up 267 strikeouts and a 2.30 earned run average.  Brummett signed with Wichita State University and also played collegiately at Emporia State University.

Nathan Gieber - A left-handed thrower, Gieber recorded an impressive 26-2 overall record as a pitcher at Concordia.  The all-time career wins leader in program history, Nathan ended his career with a 2.02 earned run average after notching 230 strikeouts in 173 innings pitched.  He was named the 4A Pitcher of the Year in 2013.  After high school, Gieber went on to pitch at Cowley College and later Emporia State University.

Cole Larsen - A three-time First Team All-State selection, Larsen concluded his Panther career with a 21-6 overall record and a 1.14 earned run average.  The 4A Pitcher of the Year in 2017, Larsen pitched 184 1/3 career innings and amassed 291 career strikeouts.  Larsen holds the team record for the most strikeouts in a single season with 118 in 2017.  After throwing for the Cowley College Tigers, Larsen is a current member of the Kansas Jayhawks Baseball team.  Before the shortened season due to the coronavirus, Larsen appeared in six games with three starts, finishing with a 0-1 record and a 5.14 ERA for the Jayhawks.

Chase Parker - An active member of the Concordia High School Baseball program, Parker has captured a 10-2 overall record with a 1.90 earned run average in two seasons on the mound.  The junior has thrown 66 1/3 innings with 89 career strikeouts.  Last year, Parker led Concordia with 39 innings pitched, posting a 6-2 record with a 1.79 ERA while striking out 61 batters on his way to being named First Team All-North Central Kansas League and Second Team Class 3A All-State.
