Concordia Lady Panthers Fall at Home to Unbeaten Riley County
Playing their second undefeated opponent in the span of four days, the Concordia High School Girls Basketball team lost at home to the Riley County Falcons in non-league play, 56-19, on Tuesday, February 11th.
The Lady Falcons, who entered the game ranked #2 in Class 3A, moved to 15-0 on the year with the victory.
The game featured three ties and three lead changes through the first handful of minutes. But Riley County ended the opening quarter on an 11-0 run by connecting on 6-of-8 (75.0%) shots through the first eight minutes of play. The Falcons led 17-6 heading to the second quarter.
Riley County took advantage of Panthers miscues in the second period, scoring 11 first half points off of 11 first half turnovers charged to Concordia. Falcon Senior Guard Sarah Thomson poured in 17 points in the opening half while the hot-hand for Riley County continued through the second frame. Riley County dropped in 4-of-6 (66.7%) shots from behind the arc and led 39-15 at the intermission.
In the second half, Concordia struggled to put the ball through the hoop. The Panthers were held scoreless through the entire third quarter, and their only field goal make of the second half was a three-point bucket by Junior Guard Zoe Bechard late in the fourth quarter. Riley County outscored Concordia 17-4 in the second half to secure the 37-point win.
Thomson led all scorers with 23 points. She was joined in double-figures by Freshman Guard CJ Rignell who had 12 points and Junior Post Jessi Brummett who chipped in 10 points.
Concordia was led in the loss by Senior Post Karlee Wahlmeier and Junior Wing Terin Rundus, who scored 6 points each.
Wahlmeier battled foul trouble throughout the game but finished with 2 rebounds and steal. Karlee was named our recipient of our H&R Block of the Game.
Rundus led Concordia in rebounding with 8 boards. She earned our Nex-Tech Wireless MVP of the Game honor.
Now 2-13 on the season, Concordia will travel to Chapman on Friday, February 14th to face the Chapman Irish in North Central Kansas League play. Concordia previously lost at home to the Irish on February 3rd, 46-22. Live coverage of Friday's game can be heard on 1390 KNCK, 98.3 FM and NCKToday.com.
