Concordia's Abby Donovan and Kassidy Leiszler Selected for This Year's Best of Kansas Preps

Two Concordia High School athletes have been selected for this year's Best of Kansas Preps for their accomplishments this past year.

Concordia High School Junior Abby Donovan has been selected as a Girls Golf All-Star, while Panther Senior Kassidy Leiszler has been named a Girls Wrestling All-Star.

Sports reporters at The Topeka Capital-Journal work with athletic directors and coaches throughout the year, as well as following the athletes through their regular coverage, to determine those students who are rising to the top of their sport.  From there, the staff narrows the selection and then announces the All-Stars for each state sanctioned sport.

Donovan medaled 3rd overall at the 2019 Kansas State High School Activities Association Class 4A State Girls Golf Tournament at the Hesston Golf Course in Hesston, Kansas on October 22, 2019.  Donovan shot rounds of 82 and 87 to finish with a combined score of 169.  It marked the best state finish for Abby, who finished in a three-way tie for 19th place as a sophomore after medaling in 17th place overall as a freshman.

Leiszler, a signee to Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas, earned a 2nd place medal at 101 lbs. at the 2020 Kansas State High School Activities Association All Classes Girls State Tournament at the Tony's Pizza Events Center in Salina on February 27th.  Kassidy, who reached the state tournament after winning the 101 lbs. West Regional Championship in McPherson, was Concordia's lone representative at the inaugural Kansas High School Girls Wrestling State Championship.  Kassidy concluded her senior season at 19-4 overall.

Best of Kansas Preps honors the best in high school athletics, and this year they will continue that tradition by shining the spotlight on student leaders who have overcome adversity, inspired others with their hard work and stood back up after losing a battle.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kansas Gannett Media group is transforming its annual Best of Kansas Preps event to a free streaming awards show broadcast, featuring professional athletes as the show's official award presenters.  Viewers will see A-list athletes like Patrick Mahomes, Wayne Gretzky, Drew Brees, Venus Williams, Michael Phelps, Gabby Douglas, Rose Lavelle, Misty May-Treanor and many more as award presenters for each sport.  You can see the high school honorees and the Athletes of the Year in each sport, along with Male and Female Athlete of the Year and more in a high school awards show like no other, premiering at 6 pm on Thursday, June 18th.

The awards show will be available to watch at preps.topeka.gatehouselive.com, or on any smart TV, tablet or phone through YouTube Premiere.
