North Central Kansas residents are invited to attend a 9/11 Tribute Heroes Weekend on Friday, September 8th through Sunday, September 10th to observe the 22nd Anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States.  Two of the planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.  Almost 3,000 people were killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The remembrance weekend is being organized by local veteran Rick Simpson.

About one-in-five veterans today served on active duty after the terrorist attacks of September 11th, including Simpson.

During the year after 9/11, more people enlisted into the military than in any single year since then.  In total, 181,510 Americans enlisted into active-duty service that year, and 72,908 joined the reserves, according to the USO.

Simpson is organizing the 2nd Annual 9/11 Tribute Heroes Weekend to remember those who perished on 9/11, to honor those who rose in service to assist in the search and recovery efforts, and to pay tribute to those who protect and defend our country in the ongoing war against terrorism.
