Clay County Medical Center Awarded $825,000 to Support Building Addition

Clay County Medical Center (CCMC) has been awarded a Rural Hospital Innovation Grant (RHIG) for $825,000 to support a building addition at the hospital for mental health and specialty services.  The grant comes from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and will be matched by CCMC with $2 of matched funds for every $1 of RHIG funds.  This expansion project has an estimated total cost of $2.5 million. 

The addition will be located to the south of Clay Center Family Physicians and will include 5,200 sq. ft of new space, with 2,850 sq. ft. for an expansion of CCFP, including a general surgery clinic and a pulmonology clinic, and 2,350 sq. ft. dedicated to a new mental health clinic.

CCMC continues to grow its mental health and specialty physician services in North Central Kansas.  Over the last eight years, CCMC has grown its healthcare services to include residents of Clay, Washington, Cloud, Mitchell, Marshall, and Riley counties through its main hospital, specialty clinic, mental health clinic, five primary care clinics, general surgery clinic, and pulmonology clinic.  In total, CCMC serves a population of well over 40,000 unique individuals each year in North Central Kansas.

When the new addition is completed in late 2024, the space will create room for three psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners, two mental health counselors, an expanded general surgery clinic, and a pulmonology clinic.  This new space will increase CCMC’s ability to see new and existing patients throughout North Central Kansas, and hire an additional psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and two mental health counselors.

The additional clinical space is also needed so CCFP can accommodate same day appointments for its growing obstetrics practice and acute care needs.  This new expansion project will have an ongoing and far-reaching impact on public health in Clay County and the entire region.
