Demolition of the Former 32-Bed Cloud County Jail on the Cloud County Courthouse Grounds in Concordia Started This Month

A decades-old and closed jail on the Cloud County Courthouse grounds in Concordia is being demolished.

Smith Construction Services of Scottsville, Kansas is tearing down the old 32-bed jail, which was built in the early 1930s.  The current demolition is expected to wrap up this fall.

The old jail was an antiquated facility with deteriorating walls and functional deficiencies before it was closed in March 2014.

In 2012, voters approved the county's proposal to construct a new 80-bed, $5.7 million Law Enforcement Center in Concordia's North Development.  A three-member Public Building Commission voted to pass a resolution issuing revenue bonds in an amount not to exceed $6 million for the purpose of paying all or a portion of the costs to acquire a site and construct and equip the new Law Enforcement Center in Cloud County, with revenue generated by housing out-of-county inmates used to pay down the bonds for the new facility.
