Geriatric Special Care Unit at Mitchell County Hospital Health Systems to Close

Mitchell County Hospital Health Systems has announced the planned closure of its Geriatric Special Care Unit.

For years, Mitchell County Hospital Health Systems has successfully operated a Geriatric Special Care Unit, treating geriatric patients from Kansas and surrounding states for over 20 years.  The Geriatric Special Care Unit at Mitchell County Hospital Health Systems is an intimate, 10 bed unit in a critical access hospital setting, operated by QUALITY HEALTH CARE OF BELOIT, LLC, a behavioral health management company that has been serving the behavioral health needs of elderly Kansans and Nebraskans since 2000.

Unfortunately, the workforce challenges due to COVID-19 have left Mitchell County Hospital Health Systems unable to fill staff positions that are vital to the Geriatric Special Unit's operation.  This workforce shortage has forced them to make the difficult decision to close the Geriatric Special Care Unit.

They will continue to care for those patients currently in their care until the Geriatric Special Care Unit officially closes on December 1st.

The closing of the unit will not impact the operations of their outpatient Senior Life Enrichment program.  It will continue to operate as normal as Mitchell County Hospital Health Systems is committed to providing behavioral health needs to the community.

Mitchell County Hospital Health Systems will continue to explore additional opportunities as they present themselves.
