Hollenberg Pony Express Station State Historic Site Set to Open for 2026 Season
The Hollenberg Pony Express Station State Historic Site will welcome visitors back for the 2026 season on May 13.
This Pony Express station stands unaltered in its original location, and it is one of the last remaining in the United States. Originally a way station for travelers along the Oregon-California Trail, by 1860 it was used by horse-mounted couriers and pioneers alike on their journey to the West.
The Pony Express was an American mail service that used a relay of horse-mounted riders between Missouri and California. From 1860 to 1861, the mail service was the most direct means of east-west communication before the first transcontinental telegraph.
The Hollenberg Pony Express Station State Historic Site is located at 2889 23rd Road Four miles north of U.S. 36 on K-148, one mile east of Hanover on K-243, and it will be open from May 13 to October 4. Site hours are: 10 AM - 5 PM Wednesday – Saturday and 1 - 5 PM Sunday. The station will be closed on all state holidays.
