Kansas Dove Season Begins Tuesday

With summer drawing to a close, the first week of September brings with it a bevy of new hunting seasons to keep outdoors enthusiasts happy.

Dove season is one of the earliest hunting seasons to open during the fall, with opening day scheduled for September 1 and the season running through November 29 statewide for mourning, whitewing and exotic doves, while Eurasian collared doves and ringed turtle doves can be hunted year-round.

More doves are harvested each year than all other game birds combined.

During the season, a 15-bird bag limit and 45-bird possession limit are in place on mourning and white-winged doves, while there is no limit on exotics — though any taken during the migratory dove season in addition to the mourning and white-winged dove daily bag must have a fully-feathered wing attached while being transported.

According to the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, hunters should consider the many fields in state wildlife areas that are managed for dove hunting. Each year, agency staff plant and prepare fields with sunflowers, wheat stubble, and other food sources to attract doves and provide hunters with safe and quality hunting experiences.
