Concordia High School graduate, journalist and author Lindsay Metcalf has officially launched a write-in campaign for the District 1, Position 1 seat on the USD 333 Concordia Board of Education.

No one filed to get their name on the ballot for the seat before the end of the filing period in June.  The District 1, Position 1 seat is currently held by first-term board member Bryan Bombardier who has chosen not to seek re-election.

Metcalf's name won't appear on the ballot, although ballots will allow voters to write-in their own choice of candidate.

"As the parent of two junior high students and as a Concordia High School Class of 2000 graduate, I’m proud of the progress we have made as a district with the recent reopening of the middle school," Metcalf wrote on her campaign website.  "I want to see that progress continue with similar-scale renovations at the high school and junior high.  With two students in that building, it’s never been more clear to me that renovations are imperative.  I believe we must keep academics the focus while being responsible stewards of taxpayer money."

"Beyond facilities, I’d love to see USD 333 expand its partnership with Cloud County Community College, as well as develop better systems for accountability with bullying and harassment district-wide," Metcalf continued.  "Every single student and staff member should feel safe at school, but that’s not always been the case in recent years."

Metcalf previously worked as a reporter, editor, and columnist for the Kansas City Star and other news outlets before becoming an award-winning author of nonfiction picture books.  She has served as a mentor at Concordia High School and is secretary of the Frank Carlson Library Board of Trustees.

"A recurring theme in my work is standing up for what you believe in and making a difference in your community," Metcalf says.  "I would be honored to earn your write-in vote for the uncontested District 1 position of the USD 333 School Board."

Election day is Tuesday, November 7th.  The Voter Registration deadline is October 17th.  You can register to vote at ksvotes.org or by contacting the Cloud County Clerk's Office.
