October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
The month of October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
First observed in October 1981 as a national “Day of Unity,” Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) is held each October as a way to unite advocates across the nation in their efforts to end domestic violence.
Communities and advocacy organizations across the country connect with the public and one another throughout the month to raise awareness about the signs of abuse and ways to stop it, and to uplift survivor stories and provide additional resources to leaders and policymakers.
In Concordia, the Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas, or DVACK, provides free, voluntary and confidential support services to primary and secondary survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, teen dating violence, elder abuse and human trafficking. Tanya Paul says DVACK proudly serve Cloud, Dickinson, Ellsworth, Jewell, Lincoln, Mitchell, Ottawa, Republic, Saline and Washington Counties.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month is a chance for anyone and everyone to unite in the work to end domestic violence.
Paul invites advocates, loved ones, supporters, and political leaders to join together in solidarity to listen to and uplift survivors directly.
DVACK's mission is to reduce the incidents of domestic violence and sexual offenses and to provide comfort and support to victims through crisis intervention and support services in North Central Kansas.
