Continuing to add national qualifiers to the list of athletes that will compete at the 2022 NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in May, the Cloud County Community College women's track team continued their recent stretch of strong performances with a team title over 26 other teams at the 2022 Friends University Spring Open held at Adair-Austin Stadium in Wichita, Kansas on Saturday, April 2nd.

In what became a two-team race throughout the afternoon on Saturday, it would be the T-Birds who would manage to edge out Wichita State University by finishing with 130.33 points compared to 125 for the Shockers. Indian Hills would finish back in third with 83 total points while Friends University (81 points) and Butler Community College (81 points) would round out the top five in the team competition.

Among the performances on Saturday would be five event victories and a school-record as Miracle Thompson would post a time of 13.76 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles to beat out a 31-runner field on her way to a school-record. Cloud County would also get national qualifying marks and event victories from Jessie Brummett in the javelin (38.65 meters, 126 ft. – 9 in.), Lucy Ndungu in the 5,000 meters (18:23.22), and Leonie Beu in the 400 meters (56.09 seconds) to go along with an event victory in the 4x400 meter relay (3:49.66).  

There would be three runner-up finishes in events for CCCC as Abigail Fisher (800 meters, 2:20.93), Hollie Stewart (shot put, 12.77 meters, 41 ft. – 10.75 in.), Faithlyn Irving (triple jump, 11.61 meters, 38 ft. – 1.25 in.), and Vanessa Mercera who would post a national qualifying mark of 1.67 meters (5 ft. – 5.75 in.) in the high jump. Cloud County's only other new national qualifying mark on Saturday would come in the 200 meters from freshman Vimbayi Maisvorewa who would run a time of 24.35 seconds for one of three third-place finishes by T-Birds with Mercera (400 meters, 57.48 seconds) and Ludjenie Mondesir (5,000 meters, 19:10.76) responsible for the others.

What's Next?
Cloud County is back in Wichita next weekend to compete in the 2022 Wichita State University KT Woodman Classic. Action officially gets underway on Wednesday and Thursday with the multi-event athletes, with a majority of the action taking place on Friday, April 8th, and Saturday, April 9th from Cessna Stadium.
