Concordia Boys Basketball Team Wins Overtime Thriller Over Marysville

Trailing the visiting Marysville Bulldogs 52-51 , Junior Guard Peyton Retter made three free-throws in the final minute and 20 seconds of overtime and the Concordia High School Boys Basketball team came away with a 54-52 win at home on Tuesday, December 12th.  The victory is the third in a row for Concordia and their first in North Central Kansas League play, while Marysville suffers its first loss to fall to 4-1 on the season.

Marysville, ranked #4 in Class 3A, had opportunities to try and win or tie the game in the closing seconds of overtime.  A three-point shot by Senior Titus Wassom fell short.  Senior Silas Miller grabbed the offensive rebound but his put back attempt missed as time expired.

Marysville opened the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run and continued to play from ahead for most of the period.  The Panthers were able to stay calm but aggressive, earning trips to the charity stripe.  Senior Guard Joey Henderson had 12 points in the fourth quarter, including making 6-of-7 from the foul line, while Retter added 6 points and was 2-of-2 from the free-throw line in the final period.

Henderson and Retter were the only two Panthers to score in the extra period.  Henderson scored the only field goal, while Retter netted 5-of-6 from the stripe in overtime to secure the victory.

Henderson and Retter both led the way for the Panthers in scoring as they each finished with 19 points.

Henderson was 6-of-11 from the field and made 7-of-9 from the free-throw line.  Joey added 4 rebounds and 2 assists and was named our Nex-Tech Wireless MVP of the Game.

Retter was 5-of-13 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the foul line.  Retter also logged 4 rebounds and picked up our H&R Block of the Game.

Sophomore Chane Parker posted 6 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.  Senior Payton Breese added 5 points and 3 rebounds and Senior Jonathan Turner chipped in 3 points and 7 rebounds.

The Panthers, who were averaging seven three-point makes per game entering the contest, ended up just 1-of-8 from three-point range.  Concordia shot 16-of-42 (38.1 percent) from the floor, but managed to make 21-of-26 (80.7 percent) from the foul line.

The game featured nine ties and six lead changes.  Concordia led by as many as 7 points on two separate occasions.

The Bulldogs were led in the loss by Junior Guard Will Otott who had a game-high 31 points.  He was the only Marysville player to reach double-figures.

Concordia has improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in North Central Kansas League play.  The team will conclude a four-game homestand on Friday, December 15th when they face the unbeaten Abilene Cowboys.  The Cowboys, ranked #8 in Class 4A, beat Southeast of Saline on Tuesday, 64-53, to improve to 4-0 on the season.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm and live coverage of the game can be heard on 1390 KNCK, 98.3 FM and NCKToday.com.
