Concordia Volleyball Team Finishes 4th at Home Invite

The Concordia High School Volleyball team finished the Concordia Invitational in fourth place on Saturday, September 30th.

The Panthers opened pool play with an 18-25, 23-25 loss to the Marysville Bulldogs.  Junior Taylor McDaniel led the way with 6 kills and 3 digs.  Senior Carlie Carlgren finished with 7 points with 2 aces, 5 digs and 1 kill.  Sophomore Charlize Cash had 7 points with 2 aces, 1 kill and 2 blocks.  Junior Kynlee Hamel provided 3 points, 4 kills and 2 blocks.  Freshman Jaylin Roush had 2 kills and 2 blocks.  Junior Kenlee Williams posted 1 kill and 2 blocks.  Senior Hattie Blackwood added 2 digs, while Sophomore Baylen Arnold ended up with 5 points and 3 digs.

Concordia then fell to Smith Center in straight sets, 19-25, 21-25.  Hamel notched 6 kills and 2 blocks.  Williams finished with 4 kills and 2 blocks.  Roush ended up with 5 kills.  McDaniel posted 8 digs, 2 kills and 4 points.  Carlgren provided 2 kills, 1 block and 5 digs.  Junior Kinsleigh Bethune also had 5 digs and 5 points.  Junior Rylie Jessup turned in 7 digs and 1 point.  Arnold provided 6 digs and 3 points with 1 ace.  Blackwood added 3 points and 3 digs, while Cash finished with 1 point, 1 kill and 3 blocks.

Pushed to three sets in their next match, Concordia topped the Hanover Wildcats, 19-25, 25-8, 25-22.  Carlgren led the way with 12 points with 3 aces, 7 kills, 2 blocks and 6 digs.  Hamel posted 15 kills, 3 digs and 2 blocks.  Williams notched 7 kills and 3 blocks.  McDaniel finished with 5 points with 1 ace, 6 kills, 6 digs and 1 block.  Blackwood provided 7 points with 3 aces and 3 digs.  Arnold turned in 6 points and a match-high 38 digs.  Jessup had 4 digs.  Cash added 4 kills, while Roush finished with 3 kills and 1 block.

The Panthers concluded pool play with a straight set victory over the Clay Center Tigers, 26-24, 25-23.  Jessup had 9 points with 4 aces.  Arnold contributed 8 points and 6 digs.  Carlgren finished with 2 points with 1 ace, 7 kills, 1 block and 2 digs.  McDaniel posted 2 points, 6 kills, 4 digs and 1 block.  Williams notched 5 kills and 2 blocks.  Hamel added 2 points, 4 kills and 1 block.  Cash had 3 kills, while Roush finished with 2 kills and 1 block.

Advancing to the semifinals, Concordia dropped a match in two sets to the eventual tournament champions, the Beloit Trojans, 17-25, 17-25.  McDaniel ended up with 6 kills, 2 digs and 2 points.  Blackwood posted 6 digs, 1 kill, 4 points, and 5 assists.  Carlgren posted 3 kills, 2 blocks, 8 digs and 3 points.  Hamel provided 2 kills, 2 blocks and 2 assists.  Jessup finished with 4 assists, 1 dig and 3 points.  Arnold had 3 digs.  Williams turned in 1 kill, 3 blocks and 3 assists.  Cash provided 1 kill, 3 blocks and 2 digs, while Roush ended up with 2 kills, 1 block and 2 assists.

In their final match of the day, the Panthers fell to the Northeast Kansas Nighthawks, 15-25, 16-25.  Arnold finished with 7 digs and 4 points.  Carlgren had 5 digs and 1 kill.  Hamel posted 6 kills, 2 blocks and 1 point.  Roush had 3 kills.  Williams had 2 kills.  Jessup finished with 3 digs.  Bethune provided 4 digs and 1 ace.  Junior Carly Brown posted 1 kill and 1 dig.  Blackwood had 1 dig and 1 point.  McDaniel added 1 dig, while Cash ended up with 1 block.

Concordia, 13-13 overall and 6-0 in North Central Kansas League play, returns to league action on Tuesday, October 3rd when they welcome the visiting Abilene Cowgirls to Concordia High School.  The Panthers previously lost to Abilene at a quad in Abilene in August, as well as in bracket play at the Southeast of Saline Tournament in September.  The league match will begin at 5:15 pm at Concordia High School.  Live coverage of the matches can be heard on 1390 KNCK, 98.3 FM and NCKToday.com.
